Does social media actually make college students more "social" or "unsocial"?
The main goal of social media is to connect people through an online source such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine etc. However, rather than serve a social purpose, it could be debated that social media actually contributes to college students internalizing. Rather than experience the world around them and communicate with their peers face to face, they have become so enthralled in their phone that it makes them "unsocial". Imagine not having your phone for a whole day and not being able to communicate with anyone via social media, almost 100% of college students would have a problem with this. Social media has turned into a sort of addiction for many students, that in future generations is predicted to only get worse. The reason that I chose this question to center my blog around is because something such as social media that is designed to increase our social skills, is in fact doing the exact opposite. Through this blog I will provide facts to support this theory and explain why I believe it to be true.
1. You began your post by saying what the benefits of social media are supposed to be which is really interesting. I 100% agree that these social media gadgets are support to connect people and it's so interesting how it turned into the opposite.
ReplyDelete2. I wish to see examples of social media "unsocial" examples and the first thing that came to mind was the show Catfish for some reason lol. These people use Facebook to develop relationships that are so superficial because theres no actual face-to-face communication and how limited one is by meeting and communicating with people only through social media.
3. I would look up the pros and con there are to apps such as tinder and what not where you meet people online before you meet them in person (?)
I really like your topic and feel that this is something many college students would be interested in looking into. You have picked a good topic that is very relevant to this day and age. I completely agree that social media makes students more anti-social. I really think we could not function completely without the technology we have today. I had a professor say once, "Why would you talk to anyone around you when you have everyone you want to talk to in your phone?"
ReplyDeleteI would like to see some articles on this topic or some sort of research that has been done to support or deny this theory. I think seeing real data from research would be a great way to support your topic with some concrete evidence and not just opinions.
I would look at psychology research reports or media websites for articles published on the topic. I know some news sources like the New York Times sometimes publish articles that may be good for this.
Great topic overall!
